Movies on Farmville

I mentioned in an earlier post that I would talk about my personal experience with advertisements within social games. I was addicted to the social game, Farmville, earlier this year. Advertisers are able to promote their products by creating in-game items that can be used to benefit a user's farm. They are also able to advertise their products through a promoted farm. A Farmville user is able to visit the farm and receive free items that can be used on their farm. A promoted farm that I remember was the farm for the movie Megamind. By visiting that farm, I received some decorative items as well as an item that can be used to instantly grow crops. Movies continue to use social media games to advertise their products.

Renting Disney on YouTube

I got a tweet earlier today from YouTube.  It said that Disney movies were going to be available to rent on YouTube and the tweet linked to YouTube's blog: http://ow.ly/7DHnD.  These movies join many full length feature films that are already available to rent at www.youtube.com/movies.

These films range from $.99 - $3.99 and there are some movies that are free to rent.  For all of the movies, except for the free ones, you have 30 days to begin watching the movie.  The amount of time you can view the movie depends on the price and other factors.  Information about the movie is posted on the left side of the page, including the list of the cast and crew.  The reviews are posted beneath the the trailer and synopsis of the movie.  Users are able to review the movies in the form of tomatoes; fresh tomatoes are positive reviews, rotten tomatoes are negative reviews.  There are also links to extras for the movie found near the middle of the page under the recommendations.  I suggest you check out the links above to learn more.

Viral Marketing

I found an article on how social media is changing the way movies are being promoted.  The article is found here: http://ow.ly/7BT91

Movies have used social media to promote their films using viral alternative reality campaigns.  For Toy Story 3, Disney and Pixar created vintage toy commercials to promote their character, Lots-O'-Huggin' Bear.  Disney and Pixar created a youtube account and uploaded legitimate old commercials, and once they were accepted as credible, they uploaded the commercial about Lots-O'-Huggin' Bear to promote their new movie, Toy Story 3.

Immortals Recommended

This post is negating away from the topic of this blog, but since I had posted information about this movie earlier, I felt I should recommend this movie to you.  I had the opportunity to see Immortals on Saturday November 19th with my family and I was not disappointed.  It was a truly entertaining movie.

The reviews of this movie were half good and half bad.  My advice to you is not to read any reviews before you see it.  Judge this movie yourself, don't rely on other people's judgement.  If you read a negative review, you will be looking for all of the flaws when you see the movie.  If you read a positive review, you will automatically view the movie as better than it is.

If you have any interest in Greek mythology or action packed films you should definitely see this movie.

Movies Advertised Within Social Games

I read a short article about how brands are being advertised within social games on Facebook.  You can read this article here: http://ow.ly/7xi6l

"Social games hold a great deal of marketing potential for brands. By working with a game developer to turn what people find compelling about your business or product into virtual goods and game features, you can expose your brand to all of the game’s players in a memorable, interactive way."

The article describes four key points to a successful in-social game marketing campaign, as well as some of the most common brand types and styles of social games they should market in.

I have personally seen movies being advertised within the social game,Farmville, on Facebook.  I will talk more about this in a later post.

How Movies Effect Facebook

I have mentioned in previous posts of how Facebook effects movies, now I will talk about how movies effect Facebook.  I found a study online that discussed how the movie "The Social Network" had effected the number of people that started using Facebook after the release of this movie.

"Opinions were mixed as to whether the film "The Social Network," which topped the U.S. box office charts for the second week in a row, would have a positive or negative effect on audiences' perceptions of Facebook as a company. On one hand, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is depicted as a harsh megalomaniac; on the other, the well-received movie is a sexy, stylized look at Silicon Valley that certainly makes hacking and engineering seem a bit more titillating than it is in real life."

"YouGov, a market research firm that's been monitoring Facebook's "brand perception" for some time now among U.S. audiences with its "BrandIndex" product, says the answer is twofold: Young adults' opinions of Facebook have gone markedly up since the October 1 release of "The Social Network," but in the 50+ demographic it remains quite tepid."

"Facebook's brand perception took such a sharp jump up among the 18- to 34-year-old demographic right around the film's release that it's difficult to argue that there wasn't a correlation somehow."

How Movies Are Using Facebook

I have mentioned how movie studios use Facebook to promote their films in previous posts.  The Facebook page for Immortals (found at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=hp#!/immortals) includes trailers of the movie, photos, and a comment section.  This comment section allows Facebook users to "join the conversation."  The Immortals Facebook page also provides a link to the movie's official web site which consists of more detailed information about the movie.  The website includes a synopsis, cast and crew casting, videos, and photos.  It also has a download tab that features wallpapers and Twitter skins.
